Facebook is using a new technology called a “situational awareness algorithm” to target advertisements that are bad for children and other vulnerable groups.
A group of prominent human rights activists, including myself, have been tracking the company’s actions for years, as has the tech news site Motherboard, which has been tracking how Facebook treats its users.
But this new technology is more sophisticated than previous efforts, the researchers say, because it is “predictive,” meaning that it learns from what it sees and then uses that knowledge to target ads that may have a positive impact on children or vulnerable groups like LGBT people.
It’s like having a social science PhD with the ability to predict the effects of ads on children, and then predict the effectiveness of the ads.
And if Facebook finds a bad advertising campaign that has a positive effect on children and vulnerable groups, the algorithm will automatically change it to one that’s not.
Facebook’s strategy is not a surprise: the company has been using “specially trained” human rights and digital rights experts in its effort to combat child pornography and to combat violent crime and abuse.
Situational intelligence is part of the company, which is using it to target “socially conscious” content, including content that’s often considered offensive to children and their families.
Facebook is trying to use the technology to find ads that have a negative effect on vulnerable groups by using “Situance Analysis,” the company says.
“If we find something that’s particularly harmful, like a group that is engaging in illegal behavior, and we then see it on Facebook, we’ll automatically do something about that,” said Kristian Weisbrod, a researcher at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Weisbrad, who is also a senior fellow at New York University’s Center for Civic Media, said Facebook has been doing this for years.
Its approach to “spiteful content” and other content is similar to one Facebook has employed for years in targeting the “suspect” accounts that posted hate speech.
In that case, Facebook’s algorithm would automatically target “Suspect Content” accounts and would automatically remove them from the site.
The company said its new strategy will make it easier for the social media giant to “identify and remove content that violates our policies.”
It said it will “better understand how to target specific content in a manner that is sensitive to the context and context in which it is posted.”
Facebook is already using other tactics, including “sending a human team to the location where the content is posted and conducting targeted searches on that data to identify and remove posts that violate our policies or have been posted with malicious intent.”
Facebook did not respond to a request for comment.
Researchers have long said that Facebook’s approach is not just bad for Facebook, but that it also harms children and others.
The social network has been under scrutiny since last fall when a user posted a photo of himself and a photo from a previous trip to the bathroom with the caption, “My pee’s not really that good.”
The photo and photo were shared widely on social media, and hundreds of children and young people were referred to the authorities by parents concerned that the photo was graphic.
In February, the Justice Department announced it would launch an investigation into whether Facebook violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
Facebook has disputed that claim.
For its part, Facebook says it takes all safety concerns seriously.
It has hired a team of experts to help it design and implement its new “solutions for online safety,” which include improving “safer communities,” including “a new algorithm to improve detection of inappropriate content” that can be flagged as a “violation of children’s online privacy.”
Facebook also says it will invest $1.5 billion over the next five years in improving safety on the platform.
But the new technology also raises questions about how it will be used.
Facebook says the new “Solved” system will be rolled out across the world in the coming months.

Facebook’s new Solved system does not yet include a user’s location.
And unlike other social platforms, Facebook doesn’t have an on-site reporting system.
The new system will allow users to report content that appears to violate children’s privacy and safety, but only if they are located in a location that is identified by their friends.
Instead of sending a team to a specific location, Facebook will instead use “solution maps” to identify locations that are “problematic.”
The maps will then be sent to Facebook’s global team of technology experts to develop and implement a “safe environment.”
It will be up to the team to “recreate and deploy” the safe environment.
And when the team creates the safe space, it will then “take care of all the other details, like what to include and how to post,” according to Facebook.
